PROVO, Utah - Box Score in PDF Format
The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (9-15 overall, 4-9 in the MWC) wrapped up the weekend with a three game loss (24-30, 30-32, 24-30) against the BYU Cougars (21-2 overall, 12-2 in the MWC) on Saturday night in Provo. "This team came out on a very hard road trip and really put them selves in a position to win a couple of matches," said head coach Pat Stangle. "It was a huge step for us to come out and play this well against two of the top programs in this league and maybe a couple of points here and there and we could have won. We didn't give up, but we couldn't hold on to a lead. We just need to get back in the gym and have a couple of good practices and get ready for the final home matches." Sophomore Rachel Smith led the way for the Cowgirls as she finished her night with 19 kills and 12 digs for her second double-double of the weekend. Libero Michelle Weydert had a team high 13 digs, while setter Tasha Weishahn had 42 assists. Wyoming hit .231 (47-14-143) for the match. BYU was led by Chelsea Goodman who finished with 22 kills and ten digs followed by Erica Lott with 12 kills. The Cougars hit .351 (66-14-148) for the match. In game one, the lead went back and forth as neither team seemed to gain more than a one or two point advantage
as BYU went up 10-7 . Wyoming made a little comeback as they scored the next four of six to pull within one
12-11, but the Cougars responded with a small run of their own to go back up four, 19-15. They would maintain their
lead as the Cowgirls could only manage to pull within two points. BYU would win the game 30-24.
Game two was back and forth as neither team really gained the upper hand until Wyoming went on a 5-1 run to go up by four 10-6. Not to be out done the Cougars scored the next six of nine to pull within one, 13-12. The Cowgirls continued to lead increasing their advantage to as many as five 23-18 and eventually they would gain game point 29-26. Unfortunately a strong Cougar team scored the next six of seven to win a tough game 32-30 to take a 2- 0 lead in the match. BYU jumped out in the third game going up by the score of 9-4. The Cowgirls pulled to within three, but the Cougars continued to maintain their advantage. With the score 13-7 in favor of BYU, Wyoming went on a 6-1 run to pull within one 14-13. They tried to keep it close unfortunately the Cougars would finally pull away and close out the game on a 13-8 run to win 30-24 and the match 3-0. The Cowgirls will close out the regular season this week at home as they host three home matches. They will play TCU, on Wednesday, Nov. 16, Air Force, on Friday, Nov. 18, and New Mexico, on Saturday, Nov. 19. All three matches will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex. |
