Cowgirl Volleyball Begins Fall Practice
August 17, 1999 LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Preparation for the 1999 volleyball season has begun for the University of Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team. The Cowgirls started their quest for the inaugural Mountain West Conference Volleyball title on Friday. They are practicing several times a day, and head coach Susan Judge feels very good about her teams workouts so far. "So far practice has been very upbeat," said Judge. "I think our overall outlook and attitude towards the season is good. The players are responding well to the things we've asked them to do. There have been practices where we've learned a lot on how to change our intensity from practice to match situations, which is one of our goals for the preseason. We've had a really good team effort and people working together, which is really exciting considering the team concept of volleyball." "I've been really pleased with the middle positions. Rachel Lau has really taken on her role as a middle blocker very aggressively, and has surpassed anything she might have done last season. Melody Friehauf continues to be one of our team favorites, as far as her experience and what she brings to the court. Overall, I think everyone is contributing, and it will be difficult to pick a starting line-up. But we have a lot of practices to go and those things will work themselves out." Entering her fourth season with the Cowgirls, head coach Susan Judge welcomes back seven letterwinners and two starters from a team that went 16-14 overall and 10-3 to finish third in the conference last season. The Cowgirls start their season on the road at the Wake Forest Deacon
Invitational on Sept. 3-4. They will open up their home schedule on
Sept. 24 against Notre Dame.
