team will be on the road this week. They will travel to New Mexico to
face the Lobos on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., and then will head to
Colorado Springs to face the Air Force Academy Falcons on Saturday night
at 7:00 p.m.
A Recap of the Week: The Wyoming Cowgirls went 0-2 over the weekend. In
the first match of the weekend, the Cowgirls faced the 12th ranked
Colorado State Rams. The Rams jumped on the Cowgirls early in game one.
They would take a 4-0 lead, which would balloon to 11-2. Wyoming would
try to claw back, but it wasn't quite enough. CSU would take the first
game 15-7. Game two saw the same thing, with Colorado State continuing
to dominate the Cowgirls. They only allowed the Cowgirls to score one
point in game two. CSU takes game two 15-1. The Cowgirls tried to fight
back in the third game, but it wasn't enough. They would get as close as
5-3, Colorado State would take the game 15-6 and the match 3-0. The
Cowgirls were led by junior middle blocker Melody Friehauf, who finished
the night with 11 kills and four block assists. A down side was the 11
service aces committed by the Cowgirls . In the second match of the
weekend, the Cowgirls fell to non-conference rival Weber State 3-2. The
Cowgirls looked like they were going to dominate the match after jumping
out to an 11-2 lead in the first game. The Wildcats tried to fight their
way back in, but it wasn't enough falling 4-15. Wyoming would gain the
lead once again in game two, but Weber State came back to take the 11-9
lead. The Cowgirls would comeback to tie the score at 12-12, and even
take the lead 13-12. The Wildcats would score three unanswered winning
15-13. Game three was very similar to the first two with Wyoming taking
the early lead. The Cowgirls would hold off a comeback, and were
victorious in game three 15-9. Weber State dominated the fourth game
jumped out to a 8-1 lead, the Cowgirls would get as close as 11-13
falling 11-15. Game five was back and forth in points for each team. At
one point, the Cowgirls would have match point 14-13. Unfortunately, an
attack error and service ace by Weber State would allow them to take the
game 16-14 and the match 3-2. The Cowgirls were led by junior middle
blocker Melody Friehauf, who led the team with 21 kills and a .375
hitting percentage. The Cowgirls are now 8-15 overall and 2-6 in the
conference heading into the weekend.
About New Mexico: The Cowgirls will travel to Albuquerque to face the
New Mexico Lobos. The Lobos are 7-19 overall and 2-7 in the Mountain
West Conference after falling to BYU and Utah over the weekend. They are
led by senior outside hitter Amber Smith, who is averaging 3.62 kills
and 2.36 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Vanessa Shield is adding 2.25
kills and hitting .221. This is the 42nd meeting between the two
schools, Wyoming leads the series 22-19. Wyoming defeated the Lobos
earlier in the season 3-0. The Lobos are coached by Laurel Brassey
Iversen, who is in her 15th season at New Mexico.

on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The Falcons are 16-7 overall and 4-5 in
the conference after falling to Brigham Young and Utah over the
weekend. They are led by senior outside hitter Brooke Effland, who is
averaging 3.66 kills and 3.14 digs. Junior middle blocker Shaylor
Billings is adding 3.59 kills and 1.46 digs. This is the tenth meeting
between the two schools, Wyoming leads the series 8-1. The Falcons are
coached by Penny Lucas-White, who is in her fourth year at Air Force.

Coach's Quotes: Quotes from University of Wyoming head volleyball coach
Susan Judge. About Colorado State: "Offensively, we just didn't have
things together tonight. We blocked pretty well in the third game, but
that doesn't help us when we can't get the ball over the net. We were
very tentative, which affected every aspect of our game. Colorado State
executed despite whatever we did. The key for us is to put this match
behind us and get ready for Weber State." About Weber State: "I think
part of our problem was our inability to motivate ourselves after we won
the first and third games. You obviously want it to be a positive thing
when you win, and not to relax and keep pushing forward, but that was an
element to why we were so up and down. Statistically, we out hit them,
had more kills, digs, blocks, and a higher hitting percentage, so when
you look a the stats it looks like we should have won the match.
However, I think we had some little things here and there, some of the
intangibles that we didn't take care of. I feel our outsides could of
had a better match. They tried to create things that weren't there,
instead of playing the way they are capable. I do think the middles had
a great night offensively. Our blocking should have pulled us out of
this match, but we didn't get it together. We blocked in spurts, and we
should have been able to stop their outsides, but we couldn't get it
done."
