University of Wyoming Athletics Department Announces Change in Volleyball Coaching Staff

University of Wyoming Athletics Director Lee Moon announced on Friday that the contract of head volleyball coach Susan Steadman will not be renewed. Steadman's contract will expire in December of 2001. The contracts of assistant coaches Mark McCloskey and Phuong Luong will also not be renewed.
"When Susan (Steadman) and I met following the conclusion of this past season, we both agreed that while her program had enjoyed many successes on the court and in the classroom over the past six seasons, the overall progress of the program had not met my expectations nor hers," said Moon.
"The Cowgirl Volleyball program has a rich tradition. I feel that that tradition, combined with the excellent facilities we have in place, will attract a number of outstanding candidates for the head-coaching position.
"We wish Susan, Mark and Phuong all the best. We appreciate the effort and dedication that each of them have displayed during their time at the University of Wyoming."
Steadman took over the Cowgirl Volleyball program in 1996. During her six seasons at Wyoming, she posted an overall record of 77-101 (.433) and a conference mark of 37-49 (.430). Her best seasons at Wyoming came in 1997 and 1998. In 1997, Wyoming finished with a record of 19-12, 10-4 in the Western Athletic Conference Mountain Division, placing third out of eight teams. In 1998, Steadman led the Cowgirls to a 16-14 mark and another 10-4 conference record, tying for third in the WAC Mountain for a second consecutive season.
Wyoming concluded the 2001 season with a record of 9-15, 4-10 in the Mountain West Conference. UW finished sixth out of eight teams in the MWC, and lost to No. 18 ranked Brigham Young in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Tournament.
Prior to being hired at Wyoming, Steadman was the head coach at Marshall University for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. During her two seasons at Marshall, Steadman posted a record of 37-32 (.536) and a conference mark of 18-10 (.643). In only her second season as an NCAA Division I head coach, Steadman guided her 1995 Marshall squad to a 25-11 record and a Southern Conference Championship, posting a 12-2 conference record. Marshall earned its first ever NCAA Tournament berth in '95, and Steadman was named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year.
Moon said that a national search would begin immediately to find a new head coach for the Cowgirl Volleyball program.
